Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-05 Fine but poor customer service The rain catcher works fine but when it showed up it was missing a part, the holder for the hose to attach it to the topside of raincatcher. Repeated emails to the vendor have been ignored as have phone calls. This is not a bad product and I would consider buying another one. But the hose clip that was promised would be nice to have. Rating: Date: 2008-07-03 good, but.... I bought one of these in the spring and then bought another because it fills up so fast. It works very well...fills up with one good thunderstorm, but I had a problem with the screened top cover. I don't know if it was just the force of the rain or if a small animal stepped on the screening, but it ripped away from the edges. I emailed the Achla company and was told that I had to contact whoever I bought it from, as they were no longer making this rain barrel. Not believing that a company would not stand by their product, I called and got the same answer. In other words, if it breaks be prepared to fix it yourself somehow (which is what I did), or mail it back to Amazon. You can't just leave the screen off because a small animal (like a cat) could then possible fall into your barrel and drown, not to mention the fact that you will breed mosquitoes in it. The second barrel I bought, the 54 gal green one from Achla, has a better configuration in that its top cover is reinforced with hard plastic spokes, so that even if the sceening did rip, it is doubtful that anything could fall into the barrel. Rating: Date: 2008-06-24 just as pictures The rain barrel that I purchased was exactly as pictured. It was filled after our first thunderstorm. The barrel is a little more costly than those blue rain barrels, but the wood grain coordinates with my vinyl siding and the flat sides allow it to hug the house and blend into the landscaping. I will warn anyone who is going to attempt a Y downspout connection that these are about 1/3 the cost of the rain barrel! We just used a flexible connection and let the barrel overflow when full. Rating: Date: 2008-06-21 Works for me This is fine for my purposes. I did add expanded overflow (see customer images), since the provided overflow hole is too small and would overflow next to my house. use a saber saw to cut your own hole where you want it. the plastic cuts like butter. insert a leader starter that you get from your home center and attach with silicone and screws.
I am saving on my water bill. i recommend getting a 2 gallon water can, to water your plants.
This is my save the planet project. I feel a little guilty since A***.com air shipped it using A-prime. Like sir Paul McCartney, air shipping his Prius from Japan.
Rating: Date: 2008-06-16 What if it overflows? We installed two of these recently. On the positive side, the flat design allows it to be placed up against the house. On the other hand, the hose connection is just a simple hose clamp which seems kind of flimsy but easy enough to repair should it break.
Also, since gravity is providing the water pressure, the higher off the ground the barrel is the more pressure. Stack up some bricks or build a platform, otherwise you won't be able to use the bottom few inches of water unless you run the hose downhill.
Finally, I totally failed to consider the possibility of overflowing. Our roof footprint is roughly 1000 square feet and the two barrels fill up within half an hour of steady rain. If you don't want to have the overflow pouring right onto your foundation, you either have to leave the open hose on the ground (thus defeating the entire purpose of a rain barrel) or rig up something yourself. There are 1.5" dia overflow ports on either side which can easily be opened up with a hacksaw. Then you'll need some plastic tubing and another hose clamp--a few bucks at the Home Depot and not a big deal, but it looks bad and for what you pay for the barrel that kind of thing should be included. |
