If you are new to diagnostic scanners, this handy tool connects to your vehicle, scans various parts of your car, truck or SUV, and retrieves a list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and code definitions from your vehicle's computer. But even if you're a veteran to scanners and auto repair, you'll be impressed with the new functionality that Actron has added to the CP9190. This device not only scans your vehicle, it also allows you to freeze-frame live timing and pinpoint your vehicle's problem. Instead of having to recreate a scenario over and over again, you can now playback the timing to scrutinize all the data and make a clear diagnosis. Combine this with Internet connectivity and the ability to interface with a PC, and you have a powerful, professional diagnostic scanner in the palm of your hand. Like its little brother, the Actron CP9180, the CP9190 is compatible with all OBD II (On-Board Diagnosis II) compliant vehicles manufactured in North America, Asia, and Europe from 1996 to the present, but the Elite AutoScanner goes a step further and is even compatible with certain pre-1996 GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles.

TrueLink Technology assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output. |
The Elite AutoScanner comes loaded with cables and a hard case. View larger. | In addition, the CP9190 fully updateable via the Internet, so it is designed to accommodate future vehicles as well. The device features a large, graphic, easy-to-read backlit screen that shows the trouble code and its definition. And although you still have to fix the problem that your scanner detects, this device will deactivate the "check engine" light on your dash so you'll no longer be distracted while you drive. Every Actron scan tool and code reader incorporates CAN (Controller Area Network) and the patented TrueLink Technology which guarantees the tool will link to and communicate with every OBD II compliant vehicle. This assures a fast and accurate diagnostic output -- a key ingredient to an effective repair. The CP9190 is simple and easy to use. The included OBD I/II cables provide both data and power connections, while the USB cable offers a quick and easy way to connect your scanner to your PC. In addition to connecting to the computer for Internet updates, you'll also appreciate the CP9190's USB connectivity because it makes printing DTCs and other information a breeze. Once the scanner is connected to your vehicle, the user friendly menu provides a variety of information in a snap. This device displays OBD II enhanced functionality with graph data (1996 and newer), O2 monitor tests, state emissions, and even reads, records and displays live sensor data so you know what's happening with your vehicle as you make adjustments. Other features include an OBD II code library built right into the tool, an OBD II drive cycle mode, battery power so you can review diagnostic data even when the scanner is disconnected from your vehicle, and a trilingual (English, Spanish, French) mode. Another important thing to remember is that all emission testing facilities will fail a vehicle that has the "check engine" light illuminated at the time of the test -- even if it is only lit to remind you of a past-due oil change or 60,000-mile tune-up. With this scanner, you can shut off the check engine light and pass the emissions test on your terms. The menu also alerts you of any pending DTCs and reads the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) status. By reading the MIL status the scanner gives insight into what might cause your "check engine" light to turn on in the near future. In this way, the scanner also provides some preventive measures to help you keep a close eye on your vehicle's systems. These functions, combined with the simple keypad used to read, erase, and navigate DTCs, make the CP9180 scanner a perfect solution for identifying problems with your vehicle and keeping you safe on the road. What's in the Box Actron CP9190 OBD II/I Elite AutoScanner Pro diagnostic code scanner, OBD II cable, GM OBD I ALDL cable, Ford OBD I MCU/EEC-IV cable, Chrysler OBD I SCI cable, USB cable, 8-foot extension cable, cigarette lighter adapter, blow molded hard case, manual, professional companion CD, batteries, and registration card. Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-05-19 Review of Actron 9190 I found the 9190 to be a great tool. It provides all the data I was looking for and displays in graph form data streems that I was needing to see. The Snap On scantools are much more exspensive and the Actron makes looking into ones own car service affordable. Thanks Actron Rating: Date: 2008-03-24 Excellent Product! I brought this product twice as gifts for family memebers. This product is very handy and works great. Rating: Date: 2008-01-07 Actron CP9190 Elite Works great. Has already paid for itself in helping to diagnose problems several times. Clear instructions and very easy to use. All of my vehicles are out of warranty now and I must attempt to repair myself. Being an old shade tree mechanic and not very up to date on the newer systems, this tool has helped me come up to speed. Most of the dealers and shops around here want at least 75 bucks just for a diagnostic check. At the very least this tool will allow you to see what codes are present and help give you a leg up on those high and mighty service writers at the shops. Rating: Date: 2008-01-02 It worked for me. I bought this to diagnose a misfiring cylinder. I had the same problem previously, and the dealer charged me $400 for diagnosis and repair. With this one use, I "broke even".
The code scanner worked well. The graphing feature is of limited use. I'm hoping future software updates will make it more useful. You can't press the buttons too quickly, or they won't work. I had to call the "help line" to install the driver so my computer could recognize the scanner via the USB cable.
Rating: Date: 2007-11-14 Unreliable I had ordered the 9190 about two months ago, having seen one over at a friend's house and thinking hey, thats cool. I read codes using an oscilloscope, and thats like primitive compared to this...plus my Jeep had started to stall in traffic and I wanted that to stop. If you know service these days, you know the only way to get quality reliable work is to do it all yourself. Meanwhile, I borrowed my friend's 9190 while waiting for mine and got to work.
The unit is pretty much plug and play, with all accessories to attach to various vehicle makes and models, all in a rugged carrying case. The 9190 has a 9V battery compartment, but I don't know if the unit ships with a battery in it. However, on some interface types the unit will draw power from the car data connector itself.
Initial impression was very good, with the device sporting a big screen and easy to use menus. Rather immediately, I had captured basic power train status and commenced recording data to help with an intermittent engine cut out in a Jeep TJ Sport 4 liter.
Heaven? Not quite...turns out the Jeep wasn't the only intermittent contraption that day because after about 15 minutes the 9190 locked up.
I had to completely shut the 9190 down and restart to get it to go again...a major pain in traffic. It locked up a couple minutes after that, and then refused to recognize the Jeep at all. My fellow car nut tells me its always done this since new, and that he uses it to simply capture codes, and it works fine in that regard. I can attest to that, but this problem required the additional (well, theoretical) capability of the 9190, and it wasn't delivering the goods.
The fix? Turn it off, unplug everything, wait a few minutes, and restart.
Not for my 3 bills, thank you very much.
Besides, mine wasn't going to be a gift and I had a very sick Jeep on my hands with snowboarding season rapidly approaching (read: top priority emergency). So, I did it the old fashioned way and bought & researched the manufacturers' shop manual for the Jeep & diagnosed a faulty crankshaft position sensor, an easy 15 minute repair (once you have a idea what the problem is, which Im sure a proper scan tool would have helped me with).
Eventually my own 9190 arrived, but I shipped it back immediately for a refund given my prior experience with the model, and noting other users were having similar problems. The refund agreement also spooked me. Basically, if you test it, you can't return it for a refund.
So watch out when ordering such devices online as some return policies state that even testing the unit voids your right to return it for a refund. If you are out for a code reader, especially the proven flakey 9190, check thoroughly your vendor's return policy before plunking your cash down and ripping the boxes open. You might just find yourself with two things now that need fixing.
One star, as an unreliable tool is not a tool at all, and quite a liability in some purchase situations that make it not worth the risk to even buy.
