Amazon.com Product Description: Designed to fit most sedans, hatchbacks, minivans and SUV's, the Allen 102A Basic 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack offers an easy-to-use and versatile option for transporting bicycles while on the road. Its 12-inch long carry arms can accommodate up to two bicycles, and can be released with a single pop-up pin when not in use for easier storage. The rack's streamlined, single-configuration design eases installation and minimizes assembly. The rack also incorporates Allen's own "No-wobble" bolt, which eliminates movement of the rack inside of the hitch and secures the bicycle firmly in place. It is finished with a rugged UV-resistant polyester powder coating, ensuring both durability and a sleek, attractive look. Manufacturer's Warranty Limited lifetime warranty About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens’ tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.
Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-29 Basic but effective I was looking for a cheap but sturdy and easy to use trunk mounted bike rack and this one was great. It's a great value. It easily holds our two bikes and when properly installed on the car shifts very little (some shift is due to the give of the foam interfaces). I have driven with it on the interstate up to 75 miles per hour. It is important to note that the rack will shift more if the bottom strap (leading to under the bumper or under the hatch) is not pulled tight enough to distend the elastic section.
I recommend being careful when installing the rack as the hooks are metal and may damage the finish of the car. However, I have had no damage to mine as of yet by taking care not to allow the hooks to bang or drag across my car. If you are worried about it anyway, you might add a little rubber or foam padding to the hooks.
All in all, this is a great basic bike rack. Not bad at all for under $40. Rating: Date: 2008-06-07 Works great Simple setup. Compact and sturdy. Affordable. It holds my bike with no problems doing 80mph on the freeway, or 10mph on bumpy back roads. Rating: Date: 2007-12-31 just what I wanted The product arrived very quickly, and I figured out how to attach it to my car (HHR) in 15 minutes but I did use the "wisdom" I'd seen from other reviews and have made paint protecting pads for the metal clips that hold this thing to the car.
My bike went on easily - I was nervous about tying it down and uncertain if it was going to move while I drove - but it was just fine. I even went on the freeway for a short distance (one exit) - no problems!
Rating: Date: 2007-11-22 Excellent product I bought this bike rack on a recommendation from my friend. I've hauled two bikes about 700 miles on 10 or 15 separate occasions and never had any problems. The pads are excellent, (and I've heard that's key if you don't want dings in your car.) Rating: Date: 2007-07-08 Does a good job simply The rack comes fully assembled and the instructions for mounting it are reasonably clear and simple and the warnings to prevent improper mounting are clear. I only mount one bike on it and it does the job well. I presume it would work for two bikes but I have had no reason to carry two bikes. The Super Saver and free shipping made it a real bargain. The same rack in the sporting goods stores was $10-20 more expensive; Amazon wins on price and quick delivery (3 days). |
