This mower features durable 10-inch composite wheels with radial tread tires and molded hub caps, 1-inch torsion bar frame, flare-style painted handles with cushioned grips, and a 16-inch cutting width for quick, maneuverable action. This mower can be put together quickly in 10 to 15 minutes. Amazon.com Review: American Lawn Mower's 16-inch bent reel mower is efficient and effective--no unnecessary attachments, no fancy gewgaws, just a serious blade-and-reel unit of tempered alloy steel with a few height adjustments for different levels of grass. The knife blades are sharp and strong, and, though the mower is light enough to carry, it's got enough heft for proper traction on slick grass. Assembly doesn't take long--10 or 15 minutes is about all. The handle cushions are cushier than on some other models and especially easy to put on--unfortunately, they come off as easily as they go on. Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-04 Eco-Friendly Lawnmower--It Rocks! Looking for an easy way to mow your lawn, save $, and get some excercise? Then this mower is for you! It works great on Bermuda Grass with the 7 blades. The only perceived drawback is that you need to mow a little more often since it will not cut the seed heads very well when they get too tall. However, you get a little more exercise in the process. I would classify this as the cadillac model for reel mowers. Easy to maneuver, cuts well, and is an excellent choice for the $. Rating: Date: 2008-07-02 This cuts great and is easy to push I love this, not only for the gas less operation, but because it's a great tool that leaves my grass looking great. I enjoy using it more than my old gas engine mower. I don't have anything bad to say about this baby. Rating: Date: 2008-06-18 Fab! Put together easily and mowed down our new lawn like a hot knife through butter. It really did much better than even the company said it would. I'm very impressed with this product! Rating: Date: 2008-06-17 American Bent Reel Lawn Mower I am very pleased with my mower! I have extremely high grass in my yard due to not having anyone cut it at all this Spring. I would say the grass is about 9 inches high and the mower has no problem knocking it down. I have to go over it a few times, but that is not unreasonable considering the height.
I did not make any blade-height adjustments. I used it on the factory-out-of-the-box setting. I had no problem with the handle assembly. You do have to tighten the nuts as tightly as possible and this cannot be done with your fingers.
The rubberized handle covers went on without the recommended soapy water placed inside each one from the instruction booklet.
I love it! No gasoline! No noise! No fumes! More people might begin buying these mowers if gasoline keeps rising in price!
If you don't have acres of grass, there is no reason to get a gas-powered mower. Rating: Date: 2008-06-12 Great Little Mower I have a 1 year old, $400 gas mower that is now extinct. I didn't realize that my new house has a Hybrid Bermuda lawn. The gas mower use to leave the lawn looking dry looking and brown, So I switched to this mower and what a difference. My bermuda turf is still suffering/recovering from severe droughts and rye grass mix(explained later), but it's starting to look like a mini golf fairway. Some parts of the lawn look and feel like pure carpet.
Note: If you have a hybrid bermuda/rye grass mixed lawn, Do yourself a favor and get rid of the rye grass period or make sure to get rid of it for the spring and summer so that your bermuda lawn can take full control.
Quick Pointers -
#1 - Reel is the only way to go for hybrid bermuda turfs. I have now tried both reel and rotary and a reel mower will train this grass type to take on a prostrate growing habit.
#2 - This mower doesn't cut rye all that great at 1/2 or even 3/4 inch.
#3 - WD40 a must
#4 - If you have a Hybrid bermuda lawn, Rid Yourself of the Rye mixture!
Last year, even with my gas mower tearing the leaves, I couldn't figure out why my Bermuda lawn struggled for 90% of the growing season until I found out that the builder of my house over seeded my Bermuda with rye grass. That is a terrible idea unless you can kill off the rye and leave the bermuda by itself for spring and summer. The Rye and Bermuda were "fighting" for establishment and existence. This will leave your bermuda looking bad when it's suppose to be at it's best in those hot summer months. Bermuda will not choke out rye like it will a small weed so my advice would be to rid yourself of rye altogether, unless you can seed it and kill it when needed on a yearly schedule. For me that's too much work, so I'm sticking to a yearly 100% Tif bermuda turf and this Reel mower :)
