August And Everything After

Amazon.com: It's amazing the difference a year makes. Upon its release, August and Everything After sounded remarkably fresh, a welcome change from the crunch and screech of grunge. Blending the vocal athleticism of Van Morrison with the moody rock of The Band, the Counting Crows turned on a whole legion of fans turned off by modern rock. But what sounded fresh soon became stale as dozens of bands flocked to the radio with euthanized versions of the Counting Crows' sound. But you shouldn't hold that against the Crow boys. August and Everything After is a fantastic rock album. Though "Mr. Jones" was the moneymaker, the disc features such standout cuts as the dark lilt of "Anna Begins," the morose "Rain King," and the outstanding U2-meets-Grant Lee Buffalo anthem "Murder of One." Maybe time, and another listen, will heal the damage wrought. --Tod Nelson Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-06 Very Good CD This CD is a very good Counting Crows CD. I am not a major fan of the counting crows but I do like some of their music...and would recomment this CD. There is not a song on it that I do not enjoy listening to. Rating: Date: 2008-06-11 Great! Beautiful CD! Great place to start for anyone looking to get into Counting Crows. This is my favorite of their albums, although you cannot go wrong with any of them. Rating: Date: 2008-05-27 A 90's Masterpiece 1994 was a great year for rock. In my opinion it was the last truly great year for rock and this CD is one of the reasons why. Alot of people dis the Counting Crows now but back in '94 this type of music was fresh and unique. They were grouped with the alternative bands that were becoming the mainstream at the time but they had this timeless, classic air about them. They sounded like a new band with an old soul. Adam Duritz was singing about dark stuff but rather than screaming angrily about it, he put it to some of the most beautiful tunes out there. Everyone has heard "Mr. Jones" and that was the big hit on here along with "Round Here" but these are far from the only great songs on here. "Perfect Blue Buildings" is fantastic! Possibly my favorite Crows song of all time. "Anna Begins", "Ghost Train", "Rain King" all great. At the time I couldn't get into "Raining in Baltimore" but over the years I've gained a new appreciation for that song as well.
Unfortunately the Crows have never reached this level of greatness since. There have been flashes of it but they've not been able to put a full album of it together since like they did here. They truly caught lighning in a bottle with "August..." Rating: Date: 2008-05-08 Will Make History There is no doubt that this album will go down in history as one of the BEST albums EVER. The creative writing of the well thought lyrics string this album together like nothing I've seen since Graceland (obviously different genre). Each and every song stands alone, but at the same time completes the intricate package that is AUGUST. So many other songwriters could learn from this compilation. This album is where all the musical talent the universe has been hiding has gone. Nothing short of perfect. Rating: Date: 2008-04-02 One of the best albums of the past 20 years This is one of the best albums of at least the past 20 years!!!! It just NEVER GETS OLD! If you have only ever heard 1 or 2 songs from it; Do yourself a favor and give the entire album a listen! Every single song on it is amazing and heart felt. |
