Amazon.com essential video: Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Actress (Liza Minnelli), and Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Cabaret would also have taken Best Picture if it hadn't been competing against The Godfather as the most acclaimed film of 1972. (Francis Ford Coppola would have to wait two years before winning Best Director, for The Godfather, Part II.) Brilliantly adapted from the acclaimed stage production, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and the play and movie I Am a Camera, this remarkable musical turns the pre-war Berlin of 1931 into a sexually charged haven of decadence. Minnelli commands the screen as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, who radiantly goes on with the show as the Nazis rise to power, holding her many male admirers (including Michael York and Helmut Griem) at a distance that keeps her from having to bother with genuinely deep emotions. Joel Grey is the master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub who will guarantee a great show night after night as a way of staving off the inevitable effects of war and dictatorship. They're all living in a morally ambiguous vacuum of desperate anxiety, determined to keep up appearances as the real world--the world outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret--prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. Director-choreographer Fosse achieves a finely tuned combination of devastating drama and ebullient entertainment, and the result is one of the most substantial screen musicals ever made. The dual-layered Special Edition widescreen DVD includes an exclusive 25th-anniversary documentary, Cabaret: A Legend in the Making, a 1972 promotional featurette, a photo gallery, production notes, the theatrical trailer, and more. --Jeff Shannon Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-05-28 Cabaret, the Movie Musical Cabaret
One of the best movie musicals ever! Worth all the 8 Oscars it received in 1972. Liza Minnelli, Michael Your and Joel Grey are unforgettable in this story of 1931 Berlin, when the Nazis were coming to power. You laugh, you cry, you fear for the worst... The music thrills you, shocks you, touches you... An experience of a life time. This movie never gets old- you'd think it was made yesterday. I strongly recommend- you will not regret!
Aulikki Rating: Date: 2008-05-08 A classic Liza Minnelli in a stylized unforgetable performance Liza Minnelli at her peak in a performance that showcases her acting, singing while surrounded by an excellent cast. It is not your typical musical that you can sit down with family and watch, but still bound to be a classic. Good direction and strong performances that are visually enhanced by costumes, scenery and a great music score. Rating: Date: 2008-05-02 Can you say "classic"! BRILLIANT is another word for this flick. Classic actors going all out in their performances! The music numbers are amazing as is the choreography and costumes. I only wish I could be as fabulous as Liza! Rating: Date: 2008-04-27 Here to entertain. Carbaret starring Liza Minnelli in her Oscar-winning performance is a fun but superficial musical. The songs and dance numbers are of course brilliant thanks to Bob Fosse's genius, he also directed this film. I just couldn't get into the story and romance quality of this film. Just watch it if you're a die-hard Minnelli fan. Rating: Date: 2008-04-18 Know Your History First I first saw this movie when I was 18 years old, and I didn't understand what made it so great. This movie will mean nothing to those who don't know some history. It's still hard for me to appreciate this film, and I doubt I ever will. The "welcome" song is very catchy, though. |
