David Duchovny (X Files) was born to play this sly, sarcastic, self-loathing, and--despite all the meaningless sex, booze, and fist fights--kind character. Well, any guy would melt against this guitar-wielding cutie (played by the adorable Madeleine Martin), but Hank really captures the "I’ll kick a lot of ass for my daughter" mentality that so many dads harbor. He’s also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment’s notice to heed his daughter’s call.

The rest of the cast, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Pamela Adlon (Lucky Louie), provide some surprisingly interesting and hilarious side stories. Just when it seems situations in this show can’t get any more ludicrous or disgusting, they most certainly do. That’s the beauty of it. Californication is a dark, coarse, edgy adult comedy. Hooray For the Underdog!!!
I hated the x-files, but seeing D Duch. put a personal stamp on this piece is releiving. Makes me want to write a novel. I was glued.

A great show...you won't be sorry!
After watching the first episode of this show, I wasn't completely sold on it. My first thought was, okay lots of sex, wry humor, beautiful California background (the same way "Sex" uses New York, its a character), but do I give a damn about Hank Moody? After a few more episodes, his promiscuity and pathetic outlook on life came together as part of a man that is much more complicated than he first seems. I won't dissect him completely, I will leave that for you to unfold just as I did. There is far more to the man, he is indeed very likeable and you do end up being on his side. Great characters, fantastic acting, humor and an inventive plot make Californication one to watch. You will find yourself doubled over with laughter and saying, did I just see that? I anxiously await season 2. HBO had better watch out. While they cancel their new shows before you can blink twice, Showtime is hitting it out of the park with shows like this and Dexter.

David Duchovny at his Best!! If you love Dry Humor, try this TV show ;-)))
Absolutely LOVE IT!!!
David Duchovny is amazing and at his best with his super dry and witty humor.... great writing, great acting, and just superbly entertaining...
This is an adult show, so, if you didn't like Sex and the City (HBO Version, not TBS), then you are not going to like Californication...
However, if you LOVE Sex and the city, you will LOVE Californication...

One of Best Series
I'm not a tv junkie and I don't write these reviews often, but I must say I thought this was one of the best TV shows that I have seen in a long time. I never watched X-files, so I didn't know what to expect from Duchovny but I found his dry sarcastic humor to fit perfectly for the character. The writing is superb. The character development excellent. Shows that are on Showtime and even HBO are far in away superior to any network show. Buy it, rent... whatever. Just watch it. You will enjoy.

Not for the faint of heart...
I have read in previous reviews, comparisons to Sex & the City, Deadwood, and all other adult series cable fare but I want to state, for the record, that this is ABOVE all of that. Sex & the City is drivel compared to Californication. There is nothing as entertaining out there. Weeds comes close (as did the Wire but that is totally different genre). Regardless, if you can laugh at yourself and everyone else around you, you will enjoy this witty series. If you think Jesus jokes and drugs are abominable, please skip this and opt for something more like Friends.
