Great until the error codes started showing up!
I have owned my Canon Pixma MP830 for two years now. Worked AMAZING! Until the error codes showed up, first there was 6A00 which in NOT in the book under problem solving error codes. Then error code 5100 started showing up. I called tech support who were great, except could not help me. They said the problem is in the circuit board and I could either buy a new one at their discount (they gave me a code that is good for two weeks) or pay to get it fixed and I would have to pay for the estimate to see what that would cost. SO my dilemma .... buy it again... or get something else. Lemon or Cherry... roll of the dice. But buying a new one every two years is not what I want to do!

BETTER SNAP UP THE LAST ONES
Used this printer for almost a year, and it is superb. According to one reviewer, they have cheapened up the scanner in the MP850, its successor, so I got perhaps the last one in town. It is reliable, reasonable on ink, fast, and does just about everything. The extra 830 I have will remain sealed until I run this one into the GROUND.

was ok, as long as it worked
after a light use for over a year I started having a problem with this machine not being able to recognize the ink. (always used Cannon ink).
this basically makes the unit completely useless.

Great product, uses lotsa ink
The Pixma works very well. We are pleased with it, but we buy many
ink cartridges. We ignore the "low ink" warning as long as we dare, and you'll want to have a full set of replacement cartridges on hand.

Designed by people who never use one
Just recently got a U150 error: "Cartridge not recognized by printer"
This follows on the heels of error indicating that I had two of the same print cartridges in the machine several months ago. I have never bought anything but genuine Canon ink.
So, maybe there is a defect in the cartridge and the little "keep the user only buying from us" chip.
BUT, all I wanted to do was scan an item, NOT PRINT. However the people who designed the software for this thing in their infinite wisdom chose to DISABLE ALL FUNCTIONS if all cartridges are not in the printer, filled with ink and recognizable. So you must at all times keep backups of ALL cartridges in case of the day when your cartridges become unrecognizable to the machine even though the are the correct cartridge in the correct position and filled with ink.
You cannot scan or fax without a full complement of cartridges.
Maybe the next version will work in a sane logical manner and allow non-printing related functions to work. Until that day I will not be buying another Canon printer. The reason for buying a multifunction printer is so that each function can work independently and not be dependent on the ink supply.
