Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-18 Should be used in conjunction with other prep books as it has shortcomings Having just sat for the GRE today and obtained a satisfying score, I decided to review all the GRE prep books I used. Firstly, I have been out of college for 13 years and hated Math [I was an English major]and so I was quite apprehensive in preparing for the GRE. Three books helped me get through the GRE - Barron's, Kaplan's and the Princeton Review, in that order.
In short, I found Barron's to be the most useful in terms of preparing for the verbal and quantitative component, Kaplan's for the quantitative component [though they really need better editors, there were many typos], and finally the Princeton Review for the essay prep. Of the three, I got Kaplan's and the Princeton Review with the CD-ROM and DVD. I really found Kaplan's CAT tests to be challenging and helped me prepare for the CAT. However, the Princeton Review falls short in this aspect. Though the CAT tests were generally good, to access them, you had to register online, and manouvering around the site was time-comsuming and very user UNfriendly. It took at least an hour before I got to actually do the tests. If you have the patience, then go for it. Otherwise, just get the book without the DVD and save yourself some hassle.
Rating: Date: 2008-05-25 Thank God for the Princeton Review I purchased two books to help me study for the GRE. I bought the Princeton Review because the reviews I read said that it had a good section on how to write the essay. Thank goodness for that review, I used the Princeton Review twice as much as Barron's (worthless). Not only is the essay section good, but the math section is great for anyone (me! me! me!) who has not taken math for a while and is math phobic. I would not have survived the math sections (I got two, due to the testing of new questions, lucky me). Thank you Princton review for my GRE composit score of 1,100. Rating: Date: 2008-04-21 A Good Choice As you can see there are a million GRE review books online. I don't know how the other books are, but I can tell you that this book was a good choice for me. The language in the book is easy to read and they break everything down. I'm a terrible test taker, and the tips and techniques they have in the book are ones I've never learned but know I can remember, even when the anxiety of the test comes into play. The DVD is a little corny, (but did you think it wouldn't?) but its very helpful. Its good to study material in different forms, linguistically, visually, and it helps you experience the material. For example, on the math he'll show you the problem and tell you to pause it and then you'll have to figure it out. Its interactive. At this time I haven't taken the exam yet, but I can already tell you that its helped me a lot. Rating: Date: 2008-03-23 First GRE Prep Book to Buy None of these books are perfect. I found this one the most beneficial followed by the Barron's. I would suggest purchasing at least these two and practicing with any free information available. The test is too expensive and stressful not to be more than prepared for it. Rating: Date: 2008-03-17 DVD is video, not software I guess it was my fault, but I thought the included DVD was software, not DVD-video. This book is pretty useless, I mostly bought it thinking the DVD would contain practice exams -- instead, you have to get practice exams from a website, and you only get two of them. The tips here in the book are pretty useless, unless you need to review high school algebra and geometry. |
