Description:

Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel, Far from the Madding Crowd is a turbulent tale of passion and destruction set in the 19th century.

Bathsheba Everdene (Paloma Baeza), a beautiful and proud woman with a fiercely independent spirit, ensnares--and almost destroys--three men. She rejects the proposal of the loyal and dependable Gavriel Oak (Nathaniel Parker), who takes a job on her farm because of an unfortunate twist of fate. He can only stand by and watch as Bathsheba mischievously flirts with her neighbor, Mr. Boldwood (Nigel Terry), unleashing a passionate obsession that burns deep within the reserved Gabriel. However, both men are eclipsed by the arrival of the dashing, womanizing soldier, Frank Troy (Jonathan Firth). Despite being in love with another woman, he sees a challenge in Bathsheba and sets out to win her.

Troy manages to tame the wild young woman, but their marriage is instantly doomed, and a dramatic chain of events are set in motion.

Unmanly, yes, but Yanks like it too...
So I know the film is British, with mostly British actors, based on a book by a British author, but this completely non-British-descended American loves the movie, as well. Contrary to popular opinion, many Americans don't require guns and/or booty as a prerequisite for their cinematic choices and have a vast appreciation in particular for the theatrical talents of our cousins across the Big Pond.

Come on, Powers That Be: Let the Yanks in the Luv Club, please...there's a good chap (chaps? chapettes? chapenistas?). Our VHSs are growing as grey as Mr. Boldwood.

Want the dvd
So many of my VHS British videos are beginning to show wear especially in the sound. For that reason, I do not wish to purchase the vhs of this wonderful movie. I will wait for the dvd or rely on my taped Masterpiece Theatre version.I saw the original Christie/Bates movie when it came out in the theater and have the tape also, but this version is much better. I look forward to the dvd.

Wonderful
I loved this movie. Like so many other Masterpiece Theatre productions, it takes it's time and tells a beautiful story of a young woman who comes to know what love truly is. Bathsheba Everdene is a willful, determined young lady who rejects the infactuation of farmer Gabriel Oak. Shortly afterwards, she inherits a farm and decides to work it herself. Gabriel Oak comes back on the scene and his infactuation for Bathsheba grows into love as he works alongside her. Meanwhile, Bathsheba foolishly flirts with an older local farmer and the consequences of this are far-reaching as he becomes obsessed with marrying her. A third man enters the picture--the dashing Sergeant Troy. Bathsheba thinks she's in love, yet becomes painfully aware that her feelings are more along the line of lust. Bathsheba is irritating at times--stubborn, prideful, unwise--yet she's real. Part of what makes this film so great is the honest and genuine portrayal of the characters, imperfections and all. We also get to see each character grow and develop as a person before the movie ends. In the closing shot of the movie, we see a look of wisdom on Bathsheba's face and we know that she has lived, loved and learned. This film is a keeper--a great story, great performances by the main cast, wonderful scenery, and delightful supporting characters.
