This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy’s mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-15 She can hear the bells. The Hairspray Soundtrack is just pure fun! The all-star cast sound fantastic on this soundtrack especially Nikki Blonsky, Michelle Pfeiffer, Elijah Kelly, Amanda Bynes, and James Mardsen. I highly recommend purchasing this flawless soundtrack and don't forget to rent or buy the movie, so you can not only hear the great music but see the amazing dancing as well. Go out and have a ball with this one, enjoy! Rating: Date: 2008-06-10 great cd for summer! This cd has great, upbeat songs that will get you dancing no matter how hot and humid it is. It goes great with a tall glass of lemonade and a grassy lawn, which makes a great dance floor. The lyrics are funny, witty, and support the civil rights movement to boot! Rating: Date: 2008-05-21 Colorful Music I enjoyed watching the film so much that I had to buy the soundtrack. You can hear the happiness in the main actress' voice when she sings. It makes you feel happy too. Rating: Date: 2008-04-22 get your dancing shoes on.. After you pop in the Hairspray soundtrack, you won't stop dancing til the last song is over with. All the actors are on point with each song that they perform whether its Queen Latifah singing "Big Blonde and Beautiful", James Marsden "(It's) Hairspray", Nikki Blonsky "I Can Hear the Bells" or Zac Efron "It Takes Two". Just about every song on the cd is listen worthy on many occasions. The only songs i didn't really care for where "(You're) Timeless To Me" Christopher Walken/John Travolta and the Big Blonde and Beautiful (Reprise) John Travolta/Michelle Pfeiffer. Its nothing against the songs or singers. I just wasn't into either as they didnt catch me the way the other songs on the soundtrack did.
My personal faves:
"Ladies Choice" Zac Efron
"The Nicest Kids in Town" James Marsden
"I Know Where I've Been" Queen Latifah
"You Can't Stop The Beat" Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley, John Travolta and Queen Latifah
"Come So Far (Got So Far To Go)" Queen Latifah, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron and Elijah Kelley
"(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs" Michelle Pfeiffer
"I Can Hear the Bells" Nikki Blonsky
"Welcome To The 60s" Nikki Blonsky and John Travolta
"Run and Tell That" Elijah Kelley and Taylor Parks
(it has so much energy and flow to it you can't help love it)
All those songs listed above and even ones not mentioned are all top notch making the Hairspray soundtrack a worthy addition to your musical library. It goes without saying that you should check out the movie as well to get the full effect. Rating: Date: 2008-04-14 Love it!!! Welcome to the '60s! This soundtrack certainly does just that. The movie itself was just awesome, and I found it fitting that the director, Adam Shankman, said he made this movie in celebration of the music, as the songs explode with Broadway brilliance and fun. All the great tunes from the film are here, along with some others that didn't make it onscreen, but were added, most appropriately, to the recording. Fantastic singing by all the cast members, wonderful music arrangements, and great energy and exuberance that never fails to uplift me every time I hear it.
If you saw the movie and loved it, and/or just want to step back in time for some fun, then this album is a must. It's a feel-good pill for down-in-the-dumps days, one you'll want to take over and over again. |
