Amazon.com: Fans of author Louis Sachar's book Holes will be delighted with this scrupulously faithful adaptation. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr. Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the Warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting, and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-05-07 Holes A klutzie boy deals with being falsely imprisoned in a boys camp setup in the desert. He learns how to deal with bullies and comes out ahead. He learns how to forgive and stand up for justice when it is necessary. There is a bit of bad language but for the most part this is a good movie. Rating: Date: 2008-03-02 Good Book, Great Movie, Great Music My son was in the sweet spot of the age group Disney targeted for this movie, and having read the book, he insisted this was a must-see, so my wife and son went to the see the movie in the theatre. When she was impressed by the movie, and read the book, I followed suit watching this DVD when it came out, and agreed.
Budding star Shia LeBeouf carries the role of Stanley Yelnats, who is falsely accused of a juvenile crime that lands him at Camp Green Lake (which is neither), where the form of punishment and reform philosophy is that digging holes makes young men stronger. It also enables the crooked camp warden and guards to search for a long lost treasure, which brings together two backstories that are told in flashback and that finally merge into the present action at the climactic finale.
The background music is excellent, not just driving the action but setting the scene with rock, blues, country, and hip-hop sounds that are, like the movie and the book Holes, as mature and well-crafted as any on the movie screen today. Rating: Date: 2008-01-07 Worth the price We bought the DVD of Holes for my son for Christmas. It is Now 8th January and he has watched it 12 times. He sings along with the tunes and knows the dialogue. He read the book with his Grade 5th class as a chapter book project and loved it. Gave him a love for reading that we have been trying to instill unsuccessfully up to this point. We owe this author a big thank you. The movie is well made. Ratings are Everyone, but some scenes and language really disturbing for little ones.
Otherwise if you have a regular kid like mine--its a great buy. Rating: Date: 2007-12-28 Lovely Movie That Follows the Book Closely I have really enjoyed watching this movie brought to us by Disney! When it first came to DVD I watched it like every week to get my fix of Holes! I just love the overall story behind Stanley Yelnats being sent to a camp with other misfits to dig holes, but as the movie progresses, you can't help to see that it is his ancient destiny that brings him to the camp along with the story of his great great grandfather! 5 stars for this movie seriously!
