Description: Michael Schenker is truly a legend. From helping form the Scorpions to his stint with UFO, his guitar prowess has been electrifying from the beginning. This brand new recording perfectly captures the MSG aesthetic and mystique, which makes sense as 4/5t Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-08 MSG If you are an old Schenker/Barden fan this will grow on you. I had to listen to it about three times before it caught on. But Schenker sounds like the old Schenker. Barden's voice is a little more gruff, but he still has the talent. Rating: Date: 2008-07-02 More solid than the last several releases This is a very solid CD and the guitar work is very solid. Gary Barden's vocals are also pretty good. Nice overall line-up with Simon Phillips on drums, Neil Murray on bass and Don Airey on keyboards. The talent in the band drives on overall better product, along with good production. One of my favorite songs is Wings of Emotion. Nice hard driving rhythm with very tight drum work from Phillips and wicked solo work from Schenker. That is worthy of airplay which it probably won't get. This CD shows a lot of talent of the likes you won't see from most of the non-talents sprouting up today...most of them would barely qualify to serve as Shcenker's guitar tech. Rating: Date: 2008-06-22 Schenker still the master melodic shredder It's great to see Michael and Gary join forces. I wasn't to sure at first, but again they work together well. Every song catches your attention from the get go, Bardens voice is subtle, and Michaels guitarwork is sweet, stunning and masterful. Rating: Date: 2008-06-19 poor production! like all old msg fans, i wanted this album to be a classic like the first two, way back in the early eighties. it's definitely not a classic, but it isn't horrible either.
the songs are ok, (even catchy) i find myself singing some of the chorus' to myself at work. the musicians are top notch, and i don't think that gary barden sounds bad singing in a lower key.
the thing that really bothers me about this record is the overall sound. i think gary's voice comes through loud and clear, the drums sound very good, and the other instruments sound alright but everything together sounds cluttered.
michael's guitar sound is bad! the songs sound rushed and undeveloped, and i think they need to use an engineer like mike clink and a producer like ron nevison or martin birch.
i'm saying this as a 32 year fan of ufo and michael schenker. if you listen to any of the ufo records from the 70's or even the first three msg albums, some of the sound quality was poor but the producers seemed to encourage michael to cut loose and really jam.
if you listen to ufo's "walk on water" album it's clear to see he still has the fire, but i think he needs the right person to put everything into its proper place. Rating: Date: 2008-06-18 best he's done in years! As most of the other reviews here have said, front to back, this is the most consistently good release by Schenker in quite awhile. Fans of Schenker should definitely buy it!
The songs and solo's are relatively tight, Barden's vocal style is more subdued than it was all those years ago - but his tone is such a great match for Schenker that he's still my favorite of all the vocalists Michael has used. The other backing bandmates are all seasoned pros and the result of their participation is that this sounds like a real "band" effort (as opposed to many of Schenker's more recent releases).
The songs I'm enjoying the most right now are End Of The Line - with Don Airey's rollicking keyboards it calls to mind good old Nazareth songs like Not Faking It - and A Night To Remember which has a Smoke On The Water-ish tempo.
Overall, a really solid rock cd. If you're even considering buying it then do it! |
