Easy Setup and Fast Performance
The hard drive features 7200 RPM speed with an 8MB cache connected via an SATA-II interface for fast data throughput. A 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection links the hard drive to your home network. To ensure compatibility with your home network, there is support for a variety of network file protocols including Microsoft (CIFS/SMB), Linux/Unix (NFS), Apple® (AFP), Internet (HTTP 1.1), and FTP. A web-based interface makes management easy, without the need to install software. The device can also be connected directly to a computer via USB and will then function as a normal external hard drive for that specific computer. A journaling file system helps guard against data loss in case of power failure.

The Iomega drive is compatible with most backup software and included is a copy of EMC® Retrospect® HD software (2 licenses) for touch-free backup, and the ability to have backups automatically done on a scheduled basis. The Iomega Home Network Hard Drive 500GB is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Shared storage
I purchased this to use via my home network to share my iTunes and other large files with my girlfriend's computer. It works great as described but, you have to use the software to re-mount the drive each time you re-boot. Re-mounting the drive is simple and only takes a few seconds once the mounting software is running. Overall I would recommend this product for networked data storage and access.

Does its job but thats about it
This item serves its purpose as a storage device but it you put it on a network dont expect not to have any problems. When it is on a network it moves at a snails pace when adding files to it and when you use a USB cable its not much faster. On a network when trying to add a file the size of 1GB it might take you as long as 15min god forbid you should try and add anything bigger than that. If you connect directly with a USB Cable a 1GB file might take 3 to 5 min. I would say as a back-up drive or for storing lots of small files it great but for anything else not so great.

Stay away from this one ...
Just a word of warning. I bought this drive to use as a backup/shared drive for my network. It worked well enough although anytime the network went down for any reason I had to cold boot the thing. It is less than a year old and the other day it stopped responding. I contacted Iomega through their chat line and while they were very polite and helpful they were unable to fix the problem. Their solution? They sent me an RMA to replace the drive for free. Great, but what about my data? Turns out that is my responsibility. Their drive is still under warranty and it failed and even though they have data recovery services they will not do anything about it. I am not sure what I could have done different. It was my backup drive and how do you backup a backup drive? Anyway, good luck if you buy this unit!

Iomega Home Network Storage NAS
Device was up and operational in less than 15 minutes. Works well for the home environment. Backup software that comes with device is lacking advance features, but should be acceptable for basic backup and restore.

Good Drive, But slow
This drive is a good buy for the price. It is slow transferring data over the network (with 10/100), but it has a usb port if you need a faster transfer. If you are looking for something to store video media on and watch from, I suggest looking for an NAS with a gigabyte Ethernet card in it. If you are looking for something to back up file, this is a good buy. The File system is Fat32 witch can cause some problems, but that is the price you pay for it being system independent.
