Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-19 Iomega UltraMax HD Great product, very quite, save so much space on my desk. Match with everything in Apple family. Rating: Date: 2008-06-12 So many connections, so little time. I purchased this drive earlier this week from a local Fry's (Sorry Amazon, they had the better price). So far it's been a good purchase. I use it with my MacBook Pro as a backup drive for my Mac files and as a place to put my Windows games on a second partition. Because the Windows partition on my Mac is smaller, I install and run my games from the external and so far it keeps up just fine. Load times are comparable to the internal drive.
One thing that I like that I didn't see in the description is that this drive has a cooling fan inside. My other drive that relies on its aluminum case to cool it gets mighty hot and I worry that it might be shortening the life of the drive inside. This drive also came with all the cables you need for each of the connection types.
Like I said, I haven't had this drive long, so based on it's features I'm giving it a good rating. Others have complained of it being noisy, but my room is never quiet and I'm so used to the clicking an whirring of fans and motors that I haven't had any problems. The base and enclosure seem to absorb vibration enough that my whole desk isn't vibrating (a problem with my older drive). Rating: Date: 2008-04-29 Lifesaver I have a Mac Book Pro and when the harddrive recently crashed I was so thankful that I took the time and spent the money to purchase this drive.
The Iomega operates seamlessly with my Mac and Time Machine and the FireWire 800 means data transfer is super quick. The unit is nicely designed and simplicity to use (at least with Time Machine and the Mac - just plug it in, connect the FireWire and you are set). Maybe a bit on the heavy side but sits on my desk and is not obnoxious to look at on a daily basis.
The only con could be the bright white light on the front indicating the device is turned on. Otherwise all is great. Great machine at a reasonable price that will seem priceless if you have one and your computer crashes. Rating: Date: 2008-03-21 Fast but Loud I got this as it takes advantage of FW 800. It is fast but be cautioned, it is a bit noisy. The looks complement my MB Pro well. Rating: Date: 2008-03-18 great for Time Machine, kinda loud I've partitioned half of this drive for Time Machine and the other half for general storage. I've had this drive over a month now and I'm very happy with it. The only real complaint I have is that it doesn't automatically turn off or go to 'sleep' when I unplug it from my Macbook pro. The fan stays on and I have to manually reach around the back to turn it off. It's also not a very quiet drive. For my use this is fine, but if you need some extra storage in you recording studio, you may want to think about one that is quieter. I count off 1 star for that. |
