bad form of backup
for backing up you important data, you need to get a reliable hard drive. This is not reliable! At all. mine died a little over a year. Tried to contact them, but never got a hold of them. you're better off spending a little bit more money to protect things that are irreplaceable like my photos and artwork! :( Rating:

Bought 2nd and love them
Bought two for replacing 250g internal and 250g external Lacie. Need the space with iPhoto&
iMove.2nd drive is for Time Machine backup. Dainsy Chained thru 800 Firewire cable. Since I have
iMac G5 hook to computer thru Firewire 400. Work great. Super upgrade. My old Lacie is still fine

Excellent! For photos or music. BUY THREE - seriously!
I have about twenty LaCie external drives housing my fairly massive collection of music and photos. These 1TB babies are the latest addition, and they're great. It gives you a lot of freedom with photos, because if you're like so many people you shoot RAW files and use Photoshop, all of which gobbles hard drives.
The price per GB is so good now you don't worry too much about failure. My other LaCie drives have lasted 7 years so far, and are still going, but I know that when the inevitable failure occurs it won't be a fortune to replace the disk.
And now I'll tell you something that will save you either thousands of dollars or endless days and nights of grief, or both: BUY AT LEAST TWO!! OR BETTER YET, GET THREE!!! Failure is inevitable. You can buy new disks, but you CAN'T replace your precious photo memories.
I keep two drives on line, and one in the closet. After I had a couple of drives fail on me (Maxtor's), I envisioned a scenario that did come true. One of my music drives failed, with about 500 albums on it. I bought a new drive and started copying the backup files onto the new one. Then the backup drive failed -- during the restore process!! Murphy's law was written for tech gear, and it does apply.
I sat there stunned, kept re-trying the backup drive, but no! Both the original drive AND the backup drive had failed, in the same week! After a couple of deeeep breaths, I went to the closet, pulled out the THIRD drive, crossed my fingers and toes and did a restore. Phew! Safe at home.
How much would you pay someone, anyone, to restore years of your family's photos or hundreds of music albums? Would you pay the cost of a new hard drive? Of COURSE you would. Do it now, to avoid heartache. Buy at least two drives. Keep them on line, so you can backup without thinking twice. Use a synchronize function, available on many file managers, to make it quick and easy. Synchronizing lets you copy the changes and not all the files every time. Synchronizing saves a lot of time.
Keeping a third disk off line, in a closet or separate building, guards against lightning, theft, power surges and mechanical trauma. Update or rotate the off-line disk every week or so.
I bought three of these LaCie 1TB external units. I love them. I recommend that you get three of them too.
