Unfortunately I was quite disappointed. Both detachable hand grips are terrible. The first soft grip is designed so you have a move your whole arm for accurate movement. If you just use your fingers for mouse control like most other gamers, your grip on the mouse will slip occasionally. The second grip is designed for finger movements, but the actually feel is just awful. It feels like grinding your fingers against a sandpaper.
All the other feature felt like useless gimmicks to me. The features in G5 is more than I'll ever use so it's no surprise g9 is just pointless overkill. Is setpoint software seems buggy and takes time to load up well after the PC and Windows have loaded. The mouse does look quite ugly. Overall I feel Logitech's g5 and the optical mx518 are far better and comfortable to control than this mouse. G9 is so not worth the $99 MSRP price let alone the 40 bucks I paid for it. Rating: Date: 2008-06-27 Guilty pleasure High cost, but I have tried several other mice and I needed one that is a little shorter for my hand. This one is perfect for me. I love everything about it. Hope it holds up to daily use by several people in the family. mgn Rating: Date: 2008-06-24 Great for palm grip users, not so great for claw grip users If you are a claw grip user like me, which means you hold and move your mouse with your fingers without moving your arm, then this mouse might not be for you. Claw users love the precision and speed that we can move the mouse in games versus the whole-arm movement of palm users. If I need extra pixel by pixel precision such as Photoshop work, then as a claw user I can place my thumb and right 2 fingers on the mouse pad and slowly guide the mouse around.
If you are a palm grip user, skip this review and buy this mouse!
I use the mouse for long periods of time each day in apps like Firefox, Photoshop, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, work and general usage. I have many Microsoft mouses including the wireless optical 5000 and the natural mouse. I bought this mouse for its gaming features but forgot that as a claw user, we aren't in the majority thus mouses are usually not designed for us specifically.
As I grip the mouse, I find that the rubber grip is horrible for my thumb because the only place you can place it is in the depressed area. The plasticky grip is a bit better because the thumb area is flatter and easier to hold. However, I cannot find a truly comfortable way to claw it even after hours of adopting to it in Crysis.
I am definitely in the minority when I say I like a flat or even slightly protruding round surface for my thumb to grip instead of a caved in area. If the above describes you, I recommend you skip this mouse and get the wireless optical 5000 mouse; you'll love it.
This mouse also does not contour to your hand's natural curve very well and forces you to turn your wrist counter-clockwise to accommodate its almost flat top, which I think is a step backwards. Ergonomically, this mouse rates below average.
See other better reviews about the features of this mouse, but one thing I love and wish was on other mouses is the wonderful feature to lower or increase the DPI with a physical button the mouse--on the fly. This proves invaluable in games: For example, when I am driving a tank in Crysis, I dial up the DPI to max so I can turn the turret faster; when I am zoomed in on the precision rifle, I dial it lower for pinpoint accuracy, all possible due to the button.
Rating: Date: 2008-06-23 So far it's great I'm really starting to like this mouse. The control is EXCELLENT. It is very configurable. You can even change the mouse's LED color. The only possible issue is getting use to the shape. I use the computer almost all day and it seems if you don't hold it well then it may cause discomfort, but I am adapting to the design and think it will be great once I get use to it. If not then I'll update this review. Rating: Date: 2008-06-18 Great Movement but Bad Features I bought this mouse to use with my Adobe programs because I wanted ultra precision. I had the wireless Logitech MX Revolution but getting in close with Photoshop it tended to "skip". The G9 Laser Mouse is exactly what I needed it is smooth and glides. The sensitivity is the best I've had, when zooming in I set the dpi lower and when surfing the internet or gaming I set it all the way up. And you can set three dpi settings so that you can get to them with a push of a button.
Now for the bad part. I had the Logitech MX Revolution and the features on that like automatic scroll wheel change from smooth to click was amazing. The G9 has you turn the mouse over and click a button to switch it making the feature almost useless, since turning over the mouse clicking the button and then scrolling takes longer than just using the scroll bar.
The number of buttons on the G9 is also underwhelming giving you a Back, Forward, Dpi Up, Dpi Down on top of the standard left click, right click, middle click buttons.
The comfort is better on the MX Revolution but the G9 is still soft and smooth and gives you options to change the case to a smaller "grippy" top for precision gaming. The option to add weights to give you the perfect feeling is also a good addition.
In the future if logitech releases a MX Revolution that is corded or has the G9 smoothness and DPI that will be the perfect mouse. As for the G9 it's a great precision mouse with not all the features you would like. |
