mary, the queen of challenge
it's refreshing when an artists challenges themselves especially if they are mary j. blige. in her forth lp, mary throws away the " ghetto fab" approach and recycles the essence of rhythm and blues. her voice might have a couple of cracks on tracks but compared to previous albums, mary's overall vocals are better. they're stronger. her lyrics have the "wow" appeal that take you to the mood she's in and paints a picture. with this album, it's obvious she's a woman with adult issues not asking "why" instead stating "this is how its going to be". mary j. blige has opened up her mind which has lead to her evolution in her music. all hail the queen has done it again! Average At Best
I know I'm probably gonna get blasted for saying this but I just don't get all the hype about Mary J. Blige. I'm sorry, but being "street" and "ghetto-fabulous" don't equal talent. Her vocal range is limited and on the majority of her songs she sings in one pitch. I put her in the category of a talk-singer. She's not really singing in the true sense of the word. I don't think her voice is horrible but its definitely not great either. I think people like her more for her lyrical content than her actual talent. She's very relateable if you're into that kind of stuff and I have nothing against Miss Blige as a person. I get the feeling she's a wonderful human being. I bought her debut album - 411, which to be fair to Miss Blige was a descent album. But since then I haven't heard anything to make me wanna rush out and buy any of her material. Sorry folks, we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on her. Mary J Blige is a wonderful person but an average singer. Rating:

Simply one word a "CLASSIC". My favorite album of all time. Any woman who has been in love and has lost it can relate to this album. Rating:

Mary at her best!
There is definitely not ONE song on this album that I don't like. Seriously. It's that good. I think Mary's album, My Life is SO overrated. I know this because I bought it for my aunt years back, and decided to borrow it sometime earlier this year or last, and besides the singles, it was definitely lacking. Most of the songs were boring and some of them even sounded the same.
This album is much different. It isn't Mary the "Queen of Hip Hop soul", it's Mary at a vulnerable point; the R&B songstress. It brings great joy to know that she co-wrote most of the material. I just love when people do that, you can relate more.
All of the songs are at least decent but my favorites are:

Memories
The last track Let No Man Put Asunder is a big change from the whole CD. It's not like any other track that Mary has done but strangely, it fits.
I HIGHLY recommend this CD if you are a fan of R&B. Music at its finest.

P.S. And just for a heads up don't bother with Mary's Love and Life either cause it has 2 or 3 hot songs & that's about it.
