So, rather than going out to the smoker to check the temperature time and time again, simply install a RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer and rest at ease. This handy thermometer monitors smoker air temperature and food temperature from up to 100 feet away. And, if the temperature drops too low or jumps too high, the RediChek alarm goes off, so there are no spoiled batches-just certainty that every batch of smoked salmon is perfection. The RediChek can also be used with an oven or grill for peace of mind while baking, barbecuing, and broiling and for fewer trips to the kitchen. Best of all, the RediChek is wireless, so installation is a snap. Your purchase includes four AAA batteries for out-of-box use. --Brian Olson Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-05 Good concept but does not work Tried it with a couple of pork butts this weekend. Was hoping not to go outside to check the temp of meat but be able to monitor temp from my living room. Sounded like a decent product and while the the transmitter would read the temp correctly, the receiver was intermittent at best. Only 25' to my Living Room. Any time I walked back to house it would lose the signal. Finally gave up.
Not sure what needs to be done to perfect this model. I like the idea, but the implementation is not there.
I'm thinking a 2 probe digital thermometer with a pair of binoculars will be good.
Rating: Date: 2008-06-18 accurate on temp frustrating to use I use this thermometer quite frequently for both the BBQ and smoker, and as far as temp reading go it mine shows a 2-3 degree separation between the probes in my kitchen before it touches the meat or grill. Now that should not happen. I also miss the the meat temperature guide on the lower priced versions, this made it easier to see that you hit your temp. So I am chucking this and ordered the lower cost version the Maverick Remote-Check ET-7 Wireless Thermometer with 2 Probes. Easier to use and cost's less. Rating: Date: 2008-06-12 Monitor This is a nice product and is invaluable for serious smokers.
I agree with a previous reviewer about some of the design flaws, particularly with the accessibility of the on/off switch on the transmitter portion and the clumsy mode for changing temperatures. The whole control interface is not terribly user friendly. Be sure and keep the instructions in a safe place because you will need them.
It does seem to be extremely accurate, both in monitoring food temperature and the temperature in the cooking unit.
So far, the range on the unit has been very good. I have not noticed a problem with range being terribly restricted by walls, etc.
All in all, it seems to be a good value. Time will tell. Rating: Date: 2008-05-31 No replay ... The sinder unit from Maveric stoped sending on the first use. KitchenAid has not answered my E-Mail.... Bill Rating: Date: 2008-05-08 Great for Ceramic Cookers!
I purchased this thermometer to complement my Big Green Egg cooker. Ceramic cookers do best if you don't open them up frequently to check temperatures, so this unit is nearly ideal.
Good:
Wireless. You can keep the remote with you during a long cook and keep an eye on both the cooker and the food temperature.
Replaceable Probes. The two probes can be easily replaced if you do manage to fry them.
OK:
Setup. Temperature set points adjust UP only until they wrap around. So if one day you're cooking chicken to 170, and then next beef to 130, resetting the temperature take longer than I'd like. However, it hasn't been a huge issue.
WEAK:
Cooker temperature range. The top end temperature this unit will read is around 450F, which for slow cooking is fine, since target temps are 200-350. Unit cannot be used to gauge temp for high temp cooking. Sigh.
Final Comment:
While not perfect, this unit does a great job for what it was designed for: Slow cooking or smoking. It also does a good job of reporting the outside ambient temperature when you're not cooking.
