Amazon.com essential video: Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his "Savannah story," and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured focus on the wonderful eccentrics of Savannah, most notably a gay Savannah antiques dealer (superbly played by Kevin Spacey), who may or may not have killed his friend and alleged lover (Jude Law). Clint Could have done better
The book was amazing in its grasp onto the culture, the way the charactors play out so on and so fourth. The movie though seemed to race through the book...take the time to make the movie as good as the book if it takes an extra hour or two of movie then do it...don't make a rushed adaptation doesn't fly...now mind you the movie is something to watch and no wheres near as bad as Stephen King's movie adaptation of Tommyknockers...but it could have been much better Rating:

Real characters
If you didn't know it, you'd think that this was a made up story. However, it is based on a true story and real characters that live and/or work in Savannah. You will laugh, you'll love the music, and you'll enjoy the true story it is based on. Thank you Mr. Eastwood. Rating:

Terrific story, very well told
I didn't read the book so I can't be disappointed that the film "isn't as good." I'm sure that the book would be able to give many more fascinating colorful details that would enhance the tale. However I think Eastwood did a very good job in presenting the essence of this story--the wonderfully individual characters that seem to thrive in Southern literature and the bizarre events that comprise this story.
The acting is all first rate. Kevin Spacey is perfect as the charming, gay aesthete who you want to like but there are all these doubts...
John Cusack does his usual understated, common man thing which works well here. The rest of the cast is wonderful, too, including Eastwood's daughter, Allison, who brings some much needed fresh air into the decadent group.
I found the film entertaining from the first moment through to the very satisfying end. It is long but certainly held my interest throughout. It makes me want to read the book and to visit Savannah.
I have only one negative comment. The special features showed several of the actual people on whom the characters were based, which was quite interesting. However, what amazed me was the unabashed pride that the sister of Jim Williams showed in her brother, who after all. did commit
murder. I guess she chose to believe his version of the story, which is natural, but still...I found it rather bizarre. |
