Amazon.com Review: Professional pizza and traditional European bread ovens are often lined with stone or brick. This is so heat is stored up and redistributed evenly. The resulting blast of heat from the Old Stone Oven rectangular pizza stone gives bread and pizza a nice chewy crust. The rustic French tarts called galettes are also well suited to a baking stone. To use the stone, place it in a cold oven and preheat to 500 degrees for pizza, or according to the recipe for bread or galettes. The stone is made of the same material that lines blast furnaces and kilns, so it can handle ultra-high temperatures. Wait until the baking stone is entirely cooled before attempting to clean it. Let it dry completely before using again. Some discoloration will occur over time; this is natural and will not affect baking. Using baking parchment may help delay that discoloration. Do not bake cookies, turnovers or other high-fat items on the stone; the stone would absorb the fat and proceed to produce smoke and bad odors. The stone comes with a flyer that contains detailed use and cleaning instructions, as well as recipes for bread, pizza dough, and two pizza toppings. --Garland Withers Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-26 broken in 4 pieces, poor packaging Requested a replacement. Customer service was good when I called. New stone is being sent 2-day w/o charge. I was told not to send the broken stone back, however I am saving the box, rubble, and shipping labels just in case.
After reading so many "broken" reviews, I had expected it to be a gamble. I tried to explain to the customer service rep about the lack of proper packaging. We'll see the next shipment.
Will update when the 2nd stone is received. Rating: Date: 2008-06-23 Poor packaging; stone arrived broken Really shoddy packing job -- the outer shipping box was crushed and I could hear the stone shaking around before I even opened the package. And when I did open it, the stone was broken into three pieces.
I am requesting a replacement. Let's see if this one actually arrives intact. Rating: Date: 2008-06-11 Fine stone My stone arrived safely and in one piece. Once I got the initial odor baked out of it (one heating) it has served me well for breads (hamburger and hot dog buns, naan, pita, pizza). I just leave it in my oven unless I'm baking something that might spatter oil on it.
I'm very happy with the quality and performance of this stone........really gives professional results with all kinds of breads. I even heat it a little to give me a warm place to let my yeast doughs rise because it will hold the heat a long time.
Great purchase! Rating: Date: 2008-05-30 WILL arrive broken 1st stone arrived shattered. Told them it was a problem with how they package the item. Spent the hassle to return it and wait for a replacement. 2nd one packaged the same and guess what -- shattered! Had to return that one to get a refund after wasting weeks of my time. Good luck getting one not broke with the innane way they package these things. Rating: Date: 2008-05-27 Broken stone and reture I ordered the baking stone and it arrived broken. I contacted the seller immediately and was told not to return the item and they would send me another. They did and I recycled all the return labels I had printed and the packing and shipping materials. Now I have recieved an email saying I need to return the broken stone in the orginal packing or I will be charged for both items. I plan on making a protest on my credit card if they charge me for the broken one. |
