Widely acknowledged as the finest Beach Boys solo effort, it's now presented with clarity, allowing the full sonic palette--the punch of opening "River Song" for example--to be heard in its intended glory. Wilson's raspy vocal may have been past its prime, but it's still affecting and ably supported by the sumptuous production values he gave the album. With high quality tracks such as the funky "Dreamer" and the poignant "Farewell My Friend", this will appeal to anyone with even a passing interest in The Beach Boys, as well as a delight for hardcore fans as the unreleased tracks (from the unfinished follow up Bambu, easily match the original's quality. Decent, but not great.
Based on the accolades surrounding the re-release of Pacific Ocean Blue, I didn't hesitate to throw down for the nicely-packaged 2-disc set, expecting an undiscovered (by me) 70's rock gem. As it turns out, the album is better than you might expect from "the drummer of the Beach Boys" - IF you'd never heard the hype - but not nearly as incredible as many of the reviewers here would have you believe.
While some may say that his lyrics were profound and "spiritual", to me they come across as simplistic and...well, stoned. In addition, Dennis Wilson's voice is problematic for me; he sounds as if he's got partial laryngitis when he opens up or goes for a high note. His vocal rasp sounds more like damage than soul.
The melodies are the strong suite here, starting with the beautiful kick-off track, "River Song", which benefits greatly from brother Carl's harmonies, which I would have liked to heard more of. The production is also top-notch, with some really inspired session playing. All in all, a solid solo effort from the least-likely Beach Boy, but not the classic I was expecting. Rating:

A Fitting Tribute to Dennis Wilson
Despite living in brother Brian's enormous shadow, Dennis Wilson produced some wonderful music. Those not familiar with Pacific Ocean Blue, and the previously unissued Bambu, are in for a treat. There is a world-weary sadness in some of these tracks, and heart-wrenching beauty in others. It's a shame that Dennis did not receive his artistic due during his short, often troubled life. Still, this compilation, even with the unfinished second album tracks, should go a long way toward correcting that oversight. Rating:

A MASTERPIECE!!! - WARNING- THIS WILL BE RE-RELEASED MAY 2008!
So do not feel that you have to spend hundreds of dollars for it. In May of 2008 an expanded edition is coming out along with Bamboo material. Dennis was second only to Brian musically and a lot of people have no clue. Beach Boys fans have been waiting for this to happen for years- along with serious musicians and audiophiles everywhere. Pacific Ocean Blue will be re-issued April 15, 2008 with Bonus
Before you pay the $120 - $299 for the "used and new" versions of this brilliant album, you should know that Caribou/Epic/Legacy (Sony/BMG) has announced that they will release a double-CD version of Pacific Ocean Blue on April 15, 2008 and most assuredly will be available here on Amazon. This version will include a second CD with the aborted Bambu/Bamboo album Dennis was working on.
