Product Description:

Newline Pan's Labyrinth (Blu-ray)
From acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro ("Blade 2", "Hellboy") comes a dark supernatural epic about the ultimate battle between good and evil. When young Ofelia and her mother go to live with her new step-father on a rural military outpost, she finds herself in a world of unimaginable cruelty. Soon Ofelia finds the creatures of her imagination in which she used to escape have become a reality and she must battle them to save both her mother and herself. In the terrifying battle that ensues, Ofelia soon learns that innocence has a power that evil cannot imagine.

Amazon.com:

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm, Jorge Luis Borges, and Guillermo del Toro's own unlimited imagination, Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale for adults. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) may only be 12, but the worlds she inhabits, both above and below ground, are dark as anything del Toro has conjured. Set in rural Spain, circa 1944, Ofelia and her widowed mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), have just moved into an abandoned mill with Carmen's new husband, Captain Vidal (Sergi López, With a Friend like Harry). Carmen is pregnant with his son. Other than her sickly mother and kindly housekeeper Mercedes (Maribel Verdú, Y Tu Mamá También), the dreamy Ofelia is on her own. Vidal, an exceedingly cruel man, couldn't be bothered. He has informers to torture. Ofelia soon finds that an entire universe exists below the mill. Her guide is the persuasive Faun (Doug Jones, Mimic). As her mother grows weaker, Ofelia spends more and more time in the satyr's labyrinth. He offers to help her out of her predicament if she'll complete three treacherous tasks. Ofelia is willing to try, but does this alternate reality really exist or is it all in her head? Del Toro leaves that up to the viewer to decide in a beautiful, yet brutal twin to The Devil's Backbone, which was also haunted by the ghost of Franco. Though it lacks the humor of Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo Del Toro at the top of his considerable game. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

fairy tale for grownups
There are few things you should know about Pan's Labyrinth: -it definitely earns it's R rating. It's billed itself as a "fairy tale for adults". That is certainly what it is. Definitely too violent for children -the movie is in Spanish, so you will be watching it with subtitle. (There are people out there, like my wife, who would hate this movie simply on that basis.) -This movie is also wonderful. I haven't seen a film like this before. Perfectly blending reality with fantasy in a single picture. I discounted this film at first, for reasons that I'm still unsure of. I saw an extended preview months later that caught my attention, and even after that it still had to be recommended to me by someone whose opinion I trust. I took a chance, and am glad that I did.

Way overated!!!
After hearing all the hype surrounding this movie, I decided to rent it.
Bad idea, I'm used to high quality foreign films, Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, Crouching Tiger, etc.....
So I was excited to see a foreign film that wasn't martial arts based.
The story is just blah, the special effects don't really show up till the last five seconds of the movie.
The acting is just so - so.
The gore that everyone else is complaining about is pretty bad.
The scene where the step dad beats that farm kid is just inexcusable.
All in all I can't recommend this movie.
The story, fx, acting, directing....etc... I wasn't impressed.

Pan's Labyrinth...a cinematic gem
A movie of exceptional quality!

I'm a great fantasy fan and after seeing the trailers I decided to go see this movie, not really expecting anything special; to say I was stunned by the unique story, the acting and the cinematography would be a gross understatement.

The story take place in a rural, mountainous area of Spain during the Spanish Civil war in the 1930's or 40's. Part of the tale is about the civil war but there is another more 'magical' conflict going on at the same time, hidden deep beneath the earth's surface; as you might imagine the two tales become intertwined as the story progresses.

Be forewarned, this is not a movie for children or the faint of heart. There are some scenes containing unspeakable cruelty and this will, without doubt, be a major turnoff to some. However, I found the violence within the context of the story and the era involved. (unlike some other movies where the violence seems to be gratuitous and is often there only for shock effect.

Pan's Labyrinth is a foreign film with subtitles; I remember people complaining about this before and after the show. To me the subtitles enhanced the special effects of this movie; it added to the realism of the geographic area where the story took place. After 5 minutes, the subtitles went virtually unnoticed because the story was so enthralling and the acting so good.

Conclusion;
One of my favorite movies; a true gem.
However, not all movie buffs will like this movie because of the fantasy component and the graphic scenes. But in my opinion it easily rates 5 Stars...more if I could.

Pan's Labyrinth
A thoughtful and most enjoyable movie. At first, I was turned off by the need for English subtitles, but the pace and message held my attention. The sound and video quality in Blu-ray enhance its message.
