Editorial Review: Scattergories is a fast-paced word game that's a real crowd pleaser. Each player takes a category list with 12 categories--such as vegetable, state, president, things you throw away--and must write down the name of one item that fits into each category. Sounds easy enough, but each item has to begin with a specific letter that is determined when the 20-sided die is rolled. For instance, you roll the letter "R." Your answer list for the above categories might look something like this: rutabaga, Rhode Island, Roosevelt, rubbish, etc. You have to think fast, because a round lasts only 3 minutes! Players score points for each unique answer. --Alison Golder Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-02-17 Can't believe I didn't buy it sooner This is truely a game that you have to think, but don't have to be book smart. It is a very fun game to play with a small or large group. One thing we don't like about it is the timer is loud and its hard to think when all you hear is it going. Rating: Date: 2008-01-21 scattergories my daughter was so happy to receive her own copy of the game, Scattergories. she is always playing with her friends at their homes, but now she can play at our home too. we have so much fun trying to get answers to the questions and beat the clock.
a good game for short or long time periods. Rating: Date: 2008-01-17 Best game ever This is definatly my favorite board game. Its a whitty hilarous game that is sure to bring a good laugh or two to an awkward family gathering. Rating: Date: 2008-01-13 Intellectual Family Fun My family and I love to play this game together. Scattergories challenges your creativity, because if two players come up with matching answers, neither player scores a point for that answer. The game has interesting categories on each card, and there are a lot of different cards. Even if you do decide to replay a category card, the letter will be different!
The one thing that isn't absolutely great about Scattergories is the included timer- it has a horribly loud ticking noise that makes it difficult to think. I recommend using your own egg timer or stopwatch to time the three minutes- my grandma even sets her kitchen timer. Rating: Date: 2007-12-30 A total blast with some minor flaws If you've never played this game, it's great. Two minor problems keep it from being amazing.
Firstly, there is a lack of instruction. Only one very scant piece of paper is provided. If you've never played the game, it takes a few moments to realize how it all works. That shouldn't be an issue. Board games should be playable out of the box, especially one this simple.
Secondly, the construction of the competition boards (hinged pieces of cardboard which writing clamps snap into) are a bit hard to link to the plastic clamps. My friend broke two simply trying to assemble the game. Also, clamps grip paper a bit loosely.
These are minor, nitpicky issues. The game itself is marvelous, great for both the party crowd and the intellectual type. If Milton Bradley paid a bit more attention to this game's presentation, it'd be perfect. |
