Worst support ever
The drive worked fine until a mechanical failure. Seagate would not stand by the drive, and wanted $1800 to recover the data. It was 45 days past the warrantee and they were very cold and unhelpful. It turned out that it was just the arm reader was stuck, but after paying $800 to get it opened up and the data moved to a new drive I called Seagate to see if they would at least send me a refurbished drive for the problems, and they stated that they needed to stand by the warrantee. They said they would look into the poor support I got when I first called, but it sounded like they guy was reading off a card. I told them that I was calling to give them a chance to make me want to stay with a Seagate product, and they simply stated that I should because they make excellent drives. The service is worse than poor. The drive worked great when it worked, but just hope you never need to contact them for anything. I felt truly used. Rating:

wow it isn't very compatible! 1/2 star!!!
this freeagent pro was purchased for auto back-up, but is not compatible with 64-bit (can be used as manual storage though) plugged into dvr to back-up some tv programs to put on computer, and now it is undetectable on 64-bitxp. hooked up to laptop says it's running fine with the seagate tools. yet it does not apear in my computer window. so the computer can read it, but not access it now. what a bummer, so need to find a more compatible external drive.
(just a mention the last seagate internal drive I bought (200gb)crashed under warranty, but seagate wants to charge 1,750$ for data recovery. so like a fool I bought another seagate drive to copy what data was left onto a new drive.)
amazon returns are awesome so I will keep shopping!!!

Very Quiet and MAC compatible
Purchased the 1TB drive and am using it for Time Machine back-up, and extra video storage on a iMac. VERY Quiet operation, and looks and feels great. I have a Western Digital at work that is VERY noisy and vibrates my desk.
The Seagate worked like magic once hooking it up to the iMac and was dead quiet. Rating:

I bought this a few months ago and have no problems with it. I researched for a LONG TIME looking into all options. Yes, Firewire is ALWAYS faster than USB 2.0 - google the comparison. Firewire is more consistent. Only problem with this is, if you have a computer with firewire 800 (not just 400) - you are not sharing as fast as you could be.
My only beef with this HD is the on/off button. It's not a button at all, but a raised texture of a power icon, which I for the life of me, still can't do efficiently.
The problem with hard drives is that they can fail at any time. For the most part, great hard drives will never give you a problem - while the good ones might give you a problem after two years, you can never tell. I have always bought LACIE and opted for my first seagate. So far, I am very happy with it and it works very quitely. No complaints at all! |
