Think Twice- service is evil
The drive worked fine until a mechanical failure. Seagate would not stand by the drive, and wanted $1800 to recover the data. It was 45 days past the warrantee and they were very cold and unhelpful. It turned out that it was just the arm reader was stuck, but after paying $800 to get it opened up and the data moved to a new drive I called Seagate to see if they would at least send me a refurbished drive for the problems, and they stated that they needed to stand by the warrantee. They said they would look into the poor support I got when I first called, but it sounded like they guy was reading off a card. I told them that I was calling to give them a chance to make me want to stay with a Seagate product, and they simply stated that I should because they make excellent drives. The service is worse than poor. The drive worked great when it worked, but just hope you never need to contact them for anything. I felt truly used. Rating:

Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet,
I was VERY pleased with this hard drive! It is virtually silent which was one of the most important considerations for me and the subdued orange glow was a nice change from the brilliant blue fad of recent years. I listen to my music at night from it so it had to be silent and dim. I had a OWC mercury elite that was supposed to be quiet but had a very high pitched whine that was quite annoying! Set up was a breeze! I use this on a Mac and after formatting it with Disk Utility I was good to go. I have not experienced any of the firewire sleep and wake issues that some of the other reviewers have mentioned. Great Great find! get it Rating:

Top Of The Line Quality
Get ready to be spoiled! This drive is very quiet and extremely fast, especially through firewire. I'm using it as my startup disk now, since it's so much faster and smoother than my internal laptop drive, which itself is extremely quiet. It has gotten rid of all jitter in mpeg videos.
On the downside, it is extremely bulky, the documentation is barebones at best, and who knows how you are supposed to use the power switch, eh? That's a serious question.
My only regret is that I didn't get a larger size drive, as prices seem to be dropping daily. Rating:

the setup was a round-about. the inadequate booklet does not describe that you need to set up the hard drive in the macs' disc utility and i had to utilize the online trouble shooting in order to get the hard drive to work on the mac. The mac will not be able to utilize the drive until you do this. the manual should assume little to no computer maintenance experience and explain this. do your research in advance and do not expect to have it up and running quickly if you are not familiar with the inner workings. doable for the average user but takes some work. |
