Seeing Things List Price: $15.98 Lowest Price: $6.99
Album Description: Digipak. This is Jakob's first solo album which was produced by Rick Rubin at his home studio throughout 2007. With its direct, open production and moving themes, Seeing Things is the continuation of Rick's groundbreaking work and sheds new light on Jakob as a singer and songwriter. Jakob is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the rock band The Wallflowers as well as being the youngest of four children born to singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and ex-wife Sara Dylan. Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-09 Album of the Year...Hands Down! "Seeing Things" is the one of the most well written albums I've heard in years. Despite many of the songs being mellow and sometimes dark, Jakob's lyrics offer a snapshot into his life and emotions. Tempo picks up (and tops out) at track 3 - "All Day and All Night" - which is currently my favorite on the album. Not to mention that this song was a terrific opener for his live show I was able to see just days before the album's release. That being said, nothing is lost from his live show to the studio...Jakob keeps it simple and mostly acoustic with no signs of being over produced (kudos to Rick Rubin for that)!
Must listens include: "Something Good This Way Comes", "All Day and All Night", "This End of the Telescope", "Everybody Pays As They Go", and "On Up the Mountain" -- and yes, that is 1/2 of a very strong album! Rating: Date: 2008-07-09 Unique Voices Jakob Dylan is one of my favorite all time artists. I think of the voice as an instrument. The more unique, the better. It's a voice with true clarity. That makes me want to listen to every word he sings. The only other vocalist that comes close to him is Mike Younger. Be sure to check him out too! Rating: Date: 2008-07-07 More mellow, but still great !! Jacob Dylan's latest CD is a bit of a change of pace from his most recent offerings with the Wallflowers. It is more mellow with a hint of folk to it sometimes. While I love the Wallflowers when they get down and rock, this CD shows what a magnificent guitar player Jacob has become while showing off his continued growth as a singer and poet songwriter. While billed as a solo album, there are some accompanying musicians with him that round out the new tunes very nicely. I saw him in concert in Charleston, SC about a week after Seeing Things was released and he played almost all of the new material from the CD and it was terrific!! If you are a Jacob Dylan fan, then the new CD is a must for your collection. Rating: Date: 2008-07-01 Seeing Things is not a look into the past Seeing Things does NOT hearken back to the days of Bob, but instead clearly plays out poetic visions of today and tomorrow. Jakob & Bob may be similar in style and attitude, but listen, pay attention, hear Jakob's sentiment, and you'll see very clearly that he draws strength from an emotive engine very much his own.
Bob Dylan and Jakob Dylan are two phenomenal singer/songwriters, each standing firmly on his own ground, each deserving of our full attention. I'm an avid listener of both Bob and Jakob's music and simply do not understand why reviewers are reluctant to grand Jakob his own platform.
Don't listen to this album with 3-minute hyper-pop expectations.
Listen to this album with time and quiet to hear the whole thing through.
The listener will glean as much depth and sentiment as he/she brings to the table. Pay attention and you will not be disappointed.
Seeing Things is a mellow masterpiece in a gallery of neon noise.
Please rate this review "helpful" if you're tired of reading through the "He's not as good as Daddy" comments... >_> I'm absolutely certain that those reviewers are either not listening or... something worse. Rating: Date: 2008-06-30 Great Solo Effort The music press does us all a terrible disservice when it judges Jakob Dylan's work against his father's long career. This CD is terrific: the lyrics are multi-layered, the vocals sincere. Dylan is great--no need to specify a first name. |
