Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-06-30 GREAT REPLACEMENT FOR TV AT THE OFFICE It works as advertised, and I am watching my home tv's at my office. Screen is not as clear as the one at home, but accepable. This is a great product. Rember that you need two tv's at home, and one of them should be available for your Sling if you want to enable others like your wife to watch her own tv. Sling controls tv at home remote, and vice versa. If you are single, don't worry about this. Only one tv's ok. Slinglink turbo powerline kit and HD connect cable made it easier to install. Rating: Date: 2008-06-27 Pretty good You have to be prepared for a lengthy setup process, but once finished it works pretty well. Only problem is that you need a very fast connection and even then the video quality will be iffy. I'd hoped to be able to hook the laptop up to a tv in a hotel room, but the quality definitely is not that good -- even in full-screen mode on a laptop it will be blurry. Rating: Date: 2008-06-20 Great product but not HD compatable out of the box When I buy a device that says "HD Compatable" on the front of the box I expect it to work with HD.
When you open the box you find out you need an HD adapter sold separately. Rating: Date: 2008-06-11 Amazing Sling I've always been on the fence wondering if I should get a Slingbox and whether it would stream well on my notebook and phone. I took the plunge and I regret waiting so long to get this.
I installed the Slingbox between my TV and Sat box. Wired everything up and tried to setup the router for it to stream through the internet. I had a little difficulty with configuring my router, but I called Slingbox and the technician help me resolve the issue in a short time. I am utterly amazed at this technology and that's saying a lot because, I am in this industry.
I installed the software on my notebook and went through the setup and was slinging in no time. The image quality is quite good.
My next challenge was to see if it worked just as well on my Nokia N95 8gb. Its GREAT! I tried the wifi first and it worked well. Next, I wanted to see if EDGE data transfer would be fast enough. There is a little lag, but once you allow the data to cache and stream, the picture and sound isn't too bad. I have T-Mobile as my carrier and currently they do not have 3G ready (from the time of this review). They are planning to present their 3G platform later this year, so once that is up, then I expect the video streaming and picture quality to be good.
Now,I can finally keep up with the Laker's games even when I can't make it home or to a bar; especially the east coast games (NBA Finals) GO LAKERS! Rating: Date: 2008-06-10 Slingbox mfr does not make this usable from internet I bought the slingbox pro before an extended trip to various other countries. The box works great from inside my house on my internal network, but once you try from outside your house on the internet, its a pretty daunting experience, and I would expect 90% of the computer users out there would fail. Ive done a fair bit of internet reading now, and it appears that, while remote access works great for some people, MANY other people just cannot get internet viewing to work, even though they truly understand what they are doing. From what I have read, slingbox phone support is useless, and my one experience with them from home while I tried to get it to work confirmed that for me. They basically told me my network config was not supported by them, and that was it. The config they do support is pretty limited. Luckily I know enough about networking that I was able to reconfigure my existing network H/W and S/W to be a supported config (without buying any new hardware). Even that took some internet reading though to identify the problems.
I understand networking pretty well, so I was able to completely reconfigure my LAN in my house to make it work from outside. *ONCE*.... now that I am overseas, it just doesnt work. The built in slingbox finder in the software could not find my box. Lucky I have a fixed IP and know what port I forwarded in my home LAN's router. I abandoned the "auto-slingbox-finder" and just manually entered the network info myself. Now the slingplayer S/W can find my slingbox, but it still does not work, even though it should. I truly dont understand why. I can connect to the box, but not stream any video or reconfigure it. It immdediately generates a totally useless error message saying it cannot connect. Similar to many stories I found on the web.
My honest recommendation is that you should not buy this box unless you are willing to take the chance that you will never be able to use it over the internet. I wish there would have been a review like this for me to read before dropping the money for it. Maybe it will work, and maybe it wont. If it does, you are happy and set. If it doesnt, dont hold out hope that you will be able to get it to work... There are plenty of messages on the internet from network engineers who are out of ideas. Its really too bad, because the concept of the slingbox is absolutely great. If the company would just provide decent support to help users solve problems, it would probably work great too. Doesnnt really help when tech support just reads some totally unhelpful info from some book in front of them and has no clue about how the thing really works. |
