By 1937, where Volume Two of this long overdue chronological collection picks up, Moe, Larry, and Curly had been performing together for over a decade, and appeared in several feature films and 19 short subjects for Columbia. They were just getting warmed up; there is nary a clunker among the 24 shorts on this two-disc set. Several rank in the Stooges pantheon, including "Grips, Grunts and Groans" (with Bustoff the wrestler), "Violent is the Word for Curly" (with "Swinging the Alphabet"), and "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb" (the Stooges live the hotel high life after Curly wins a radio contest). These comedies must have been a great escape for Depression-era moviegoers, particularly the ones in which the rich are reduced to food-throwing goofs ("Three Sappy People"). For the Stooges, it’s not prosperity that’s around the corner, but more often, con men on the lookout for "suckers" to swindle ("A Ducking They Will Go," "Playing the Ponies"). Reflecting America’s can-do spirit, the Stooges are nothing if not resilient. These shorts may find them down, but they are never out. The boys are ungainfully employed as Calvary spies ("Goofs and Saddles"), janitors ("Three Missing Links"), dog washers ("Mutts to You"), firemen ("Flat Foot Stooges"), traveling salesmen ("Saved by the Belle"), and vets ("Calling all Curs"). Some of the best shorts turn on mistaken identity: They are confused for college professors in "Violent is the Word for Curly," high society escorts in "Termites of 1938," and famous decorators in "Tassels in the Air." For all the hair-tearing, eye-poking, and shovel-clobbering, the Stooges surprise with the odd musical grace note, such as their rendition of the silly "The Lollipop Song" in "Wee Wee Monsieur," and their music box-accompanied pas-de-trio with pilgrim lasses Faith, Hope, and Charity in "Back to the Woods." One also does not ordinarily look to the Stooges for pathos, or, for that matter, heartwarming happy endings, but "Cash and Carry" delivers both as the boys set out to raise $500 for a crippled boy's operation. "Flat Foot Stooges" is something of a milestone. It marks the debut of "Three Blind Mice" as the Stooges new theme song, which would replace the twittering "Listen to the Mockingbird." The shorts are presented complete and uncut, which means the PC police are standing by to issue citations for such egregious stereotypes as the grunting, shrieking "savages" in the colonial comedy, "Back to the Woods," and the Stooges’ turn as Yiddish-speaking Chinese launderers in "Mutts to You." --Donald Liebenson

The classic laughs keep coming!
I have the same feelings about vol. 2 as I did in my review of vol. 1. A must have for any Stooges fan! Vol. 2 offers all episodes produced chronologically from 1937-1939 at an amazing price. I can't wait for Vol. 3 to come out to keep building my collection. Although I might have to draw the line when the "Joe" years come out on DVD. He sucks!

If you like the Stooges, you'll love this!
I bought the first volume and now the second. I think that this is the best purchase you can make if you need a good laugh in the midst of this crazy life we all lead. The restoration and re-mastering of the video and audio make these very enjoyable and you feel as if you have a time capsule into the past. This collection also features some of the more memorable performances by Curly. The fact that Sony released these in chronological order means that there are no repeats or overlaps. So I hope Sony keeps on restoring and releasing these dubious masterpieces. If you want a good dose of the Stooges, buy this DVD, you won't regret it. Pick up volume one as well while you are at it. I did!

The Three Stooges, Vol. 2: 1937-1939
Volume 2 is an improvement over Volume 1, mainly because the Stooges have really hit their stride after having done 19 shorts previous to this. The slapstick is turned up a notch & Curly's routines have now come center stage. This set has 24 shorts that include: Three Dumb Clucks in which Curly has two parts; Goofs & Saddles where they are scouts in the West; Dizzy Doctors that features the infamous Brighto; Termites of 1938, one of their famous exterminator routines; Mutts to You in which they're accused of being a baby snatcher; We Want Our Mummy, their famous skit searching for Pharoh Rootin-Tootin; & Three Sappy People where they are mistaken for three famous psychiatrists. All the routines are outstanding &, unlike the first volume, there aren't any so-so shorts here.

If you want some side-splitting slapstick then Volume Two is for you. It's unfortunate but there isn't any bonus materials, not even captioning. The remastering is excellent though an occasional flaw gets through but nothing that's distracting.

Comedy Classics finally released the right way
The Three Stooges shorts are FINALLY getting their just due by being released in chronological order and with superb picture quality and sound.
This is definitely where the stooges hit their stride and each of these comic geniuses developed his individual role in the trio. Moe established himself as the leader who was so sharp with a verbal or physical assault. Larry was the neutral one who mostly reacted to the other two and was usually on the receiving end of Moe's abuse. Finally, we have the quintessential stooge Curly whose comic timing, body language, hilarious facial expressions and unforgettable sayings (e.g. NYUK, NYUK) brought it all together.
Most of the shorts during this period were directed by Del Lord and Jules White and it can be clearly seen how their presence behind the camera raised the Stooge shorts to a new level of hilarity. From causing a riot in the old West in "Goofs and Saddles" to swinging the alphabet in "Violent is the Word for Curly" you can be sure that the Stooges will deliver the laughs.
Keep these collections going because there have been far too many Three Stooges DVDs that were so poorly organized and had the same shorts being released on multiple DVDs. At last, the fans get the Stooge episodes the way that they should have been released in the first place.
