Album Description: Miami's six-foot, 300-pound rap figure known as Rick Ross embraced his city's reputation on his debut single, "Hustlin'," in 2006. While Atlanta and Houston artists were establishing their cities as Southern strongholds, Ross aimed at putting Miami back in rap's national spotlight. Ross grew up in Carol City, FL, an impoverished northern suburb of Miami. Influenced by artists like Luther Campbell and the Notorious B.I.G., Roberts formed local rap group the Carol City Cartel and began rapping in the mid-'90s. Ross ended up on Miami-based Slip-N-Side Records, the label home of Trick Daddy and Trina. During the early to mid-2000s, he became popular and well known locally through touring with Trick Daddy and guest-appearing on a few Slip-N-Slide releases, but didn't release any solo material until 2006. Once "Hustlin'" caught the ear of a few executives within the national industry, a bidding war ensued that included offers from Bad Boy CEO Sean "Diddy" Combs and The Inc. (formerly Murder Inc.) president Irv Gotti. Nonetheless, Def Jam president and veteran rapper Jay-Z signed Ross to a multi-million-dollar deal. The Miami anthem "Hustlin'" went on to receive gold status from RIAA in May 2006 and sold over a million ringtone units before the physical release of his debut album, Port of Miami. Released in August 2006, Ross' debut was Slip-N-Side's first project under the Def Jam partnership, and it went to number one on the Billboard album chart. Customer Reviews: Rating: Date: 2008-07-16 Most Underrated (By Me) One of these days I'm going to have to give the man his props, 2 albums and twice he outdid my expectations. I only bought the last album because of "Hustlin" and was surprised by tracks like "Push It", "Cross That Line" & "Where My Money". Rick Ross' ear for beats was proven but I had my doubts about his raps.
This time around he has the Hip-Hop Brains Trust over at MTV to thank for my hard earned bucks. A top 5 birth was a complete surprise for me and I had to check out why. I must say that this album too exceeded my expectations, its not to say it is without its faults, tracks like "I'm Only Human" show that he is exactly that. But tracks like "Luxury Tax" and "Maybach Music" are tracks that I would have thought are bigger than the 300 pound Ross but he handles them like a ... BOSS. "Maybach Music" couldn't have a better feature in Jay-Z and it has my favourite line from Ross' (Stuffed shells thanks to crack got cracked crabs and lobsters, not all mobsters imposters). And no that's not biting, to quote Dr. Carter, "its called recycling RE reciting something cause you just like it so you say it just like it. Some say its biting but I say its enlightening besides BIG was one of the brightest....lol
On the strength of those two tracks alone the album gets 4 stars but he shows and proves throughout the album. The singles "The Boss" & "Speedin'" do not live up to his previous efforts beat wise but his flow is tighter than ever (Ten black Maybachs back to back in a lane). The same can be said about "All I have In this World" which has an OK chorus but is saved by Ross' flow. The whole package, flow, chorus and beats comes together perfectly on "Money Make Me Come" should have been a single!
Overall Rick Ross stands up, flow wise, on this album and lyrically he has a few gems littered throughout the album. But he loses points for lacking depth in terms of content, you'd swear that Miami is a city without problems from listening to this CD. Rating: Date: 2008-06-22 Rick Ross Trilla A Walk Through LifeTrilla by Rick ross is a good album worth checking out there is some great production on this album and some nice collaborations such as luxuary tax featuring Lil Wayne, young jeezy and trick daddy.Speeding is also another hit song featuring R Kelly. The down side to this album is there are songs on here that dont live up to the Miami based rappers fullest potencial. Rating: Date: 2008-06-17 Actually pretty good It's hard for me to review a rap album comin' from the south, since with the exception of Scarface, Ludacris and Outkast, I prefer listening to artists like Common, Talib and Lupe.
Still, when it comes to Rick Ross I do feel that there is some potential. He is probably on the same level as T.I. and Lil Wayne, with a nice "unique" flow and great production in his songs. Best songs on the CD are (of course) "Maybach Music feat. Jay-Z", "We Shinin'", "This Me" , "Luxury Tax feat. Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy" and "Speedin' feat. R.Kelly".
This might not be as good as Lil Wayne's new "The Carter III", but most definately "Trilla" deserves more than 3 stars. Rating: Date: 2008-06-16 dont give reviews on past work its like the people who said jordan was the best when he was on the wizards. he use to be. same way i think rick ross use to be nice. he fell off. the first album wasnt good either, it was ok. if the song doesnt have the chorus built in with it, it wont be good. ex: every day im hustlen, and boss has the chorus there and seem to be the singles on both albums what a coincidence. Rating: Date: 2008-06-03 OK Well another Rick Ross album and like the first album unimpressive except for the 1-2 songs on it. Save your money and download the particular hits or song you like from this album only. |
